Sandra Haynes is an evangelist whose sturdy poetic works can be summed up with the words of the prophet Isaiah, “This is the way—walk in it”. Her poetry upholds the established convictions of Christians with grace and confidence. In her religious poetry she relies heavily on the pronouns, “you” to warn the wayward of God’s justice and encourage the fearful of His love. Just as often she makes common cause with her readers with the pronoun, “we”. If I had a suggestion, it would be to find greater use for the “I” Suspicious of self, she largely eschews that pronoun. But her poem, “Heart Probe”, connected with me with force: “Do I hog the conversations that rise and value my words alone? Or do I give place for others to share, my comments to them postpone?” There is another side to her poetic impulse as she views the world around her and within herself. She has an eye for the ridiculous and the sublime. As she reflected when contemplating a poem, “Will I find humor or serious thought, amusing and simple or lesson that’s taught…Hand me some paper, give me a start, I’ll lend a glimpse of mind and heart.” The lay of her heart is always evident in her devotion to her Father above. Unlike many modern poets, her lines rhyme, always inviting the reader to sound them out.
